Is my UK pension Taxed in Cyprus?

If you are a UK tax resident moving to Cyprus, your UK state and private pensions will generally be taxed solely in Cyprus at an incredibly favorable rate.
You have two options to choose from each year, and you can pick whichever results in a lower tax bill:

Option 1: The Flat 5% Rate (Most Popular)
  • The Rule: All foreign pension income is taxed at a flat rate of 5%.
  • The Exemption: The first €3,420 of your pension is completely tax-free.
  • Example: If your UK pension pays €15,000 per year, your tax would be 5% of (€15,000 - €3,420), which equals €579 per year.
Option 2: Standard Progressive Income Tax
  • The Rule: You can choose to add your pension to your worldwide income and use the Cypriot standard progressive tax bands.
  • The Tax Brackets: Income up to €22,000 is taxed at 0%, meaning you pay zero tax if your total pension falls below this threshold. Income from €22,001 to €32,000 is taxed at 20%, rising progressively from there.

Important Exceptions to Note
  • Government Service Pensions: If you have a UK civil service, military, teacher, or police pension, it is taxable in the UK instead of Cyprus (unless you are a Cypriot national).

  • Double Taxation Agreement: Cyprus and the UK have a formal Double Tax Treaty ensuring you do not pay tax on the same pension in both countries.
  • Lump Sums: Pension lump sums taken at retirement generally do not attract tax in Cyprus, but taking your entire fund in one go may trigger UK tax implications.
You should apply to have your UK pensions paid gross to avoid double taxation issues. It is highly recommended to consult the Cyprus Tax Department or a cross-border financial advisor to properly arrange your residency status and tax declarations.
